A Brief History of Dominica by The World Factbook 2002
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the island a colony in 1805. “As was recently published in JAMA, in 2002 Ross University placed more graduates into 1st year residency positions than any other medical school in the world, including all the US medical schools.”
Ross University School of Medicine provides a unique learning experience for students who are committed to become effective, successful physicians. During the University’s twenty-six year history, over 4,000 Ross graduates have entered U.S. residency programs in every specialty in medicine, including programs at all of the major academic medical centers. During 2002 and 2003, Ross graduates comprised the largest medical school cohort in the National Residency Match Program. The first-time pass rates and median scores on Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing exam for Ross students are consistently within one standard deviation of the U.S. norm.
Founded in 1978, Ross University Medical School offers a curriculum designed to prepare students for licensure and practice in the U.S. Students spend their first four semesters (15 weeks each) on the island nation of Dominica in the Caribbean. There, they receive intensive instruction in the Basic Sciences as well as an introduction to clinical medicine. Upon completion of four semesters, students with a GPA of 2.9 or better proceed to the Advanced Introduction to Clinical Medicine program (AICM) offered in Miami, FL. Students with less than a 2.9 GPA take the Basic Medical Sciences Integration course during a fifth semester on Dominica to better establish their foundation for clinical learning and prepare for the USMLE.
